Galapagos and Machu Picchu in One Trip: A 12–14 Day Itinerary

A Galapagos and Machu Picchu tour fits into 12 to 14 days with the right order of flights. See a sample itinerary, how to connect Lima with Quito or Guayaquil, altitude tips and what to book first.

A Galapagos and Machu Picchu tour is one of the most popular South America combinations for American travelers. It fits into 12 to 14 days if you plan the flights carefully: Peru and Ecuador are neighbors, but there are no direct flights from Cusco to the Galapagos, so you connect through Lima and Quito or Guayaquil. If your group would rather have the whole yacht and set its own pace, compare Galapagos charters before you book.

Galapagos and Machu Picchu tour: what is the quick answer?

Quick answer: plan 5 to 6 days in Peru (Lima, Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu), one connection day to Ecuador, and a 5 to 8 day Galapagos cruise. Do Peru first if you want to end relaxed at sea, or the Galapagos first if you want to adapt to altitude later.

What does a sample 13-day itinerary look like?

Day Plan
1 Fly from the USA to Lima; overnight
2 Fly to Cusco; transfer to the Sacred Valley (lower altitude)
3 Sacred Valley; train to Aguas Calientes
4 Machu Picchu; return to Cusco
5 Cusco; fly to Lima
6 Fly Lima to Quito or Guayaquil; overnight
7–11 5-day Galapagos cruise
12 Fly to mainland; connect to the USA or overnight

Which order is better: Peru or Galapagos first?

Peru first is common: you handle altitude when you are fresh, then rest on the cruise. Galapagos first works if the cruise dates fit better, and you arrive in Cusco relaxed. Either way, keep a buffer night before the cruise; cruises do not wait for late flights.

Check flight schedules; there are no direct Cusco–Galapagos flights.

How do you connect Lima with the Galapagos?

Fly Lima to Quito or Guayaquil (about 2 hours), overnight, then take the morning flight to Baltra or San Cristóbal. Read Quito or Guayaquil before your cruise to choose the gateway.

What about altitude?

Cusco sits at about 3,400 m (11,150 ft) and Quito at about 2,850 m (9,350 ft). Start low in the Sacred Valley, drink water and go slowly. The Galapagos is at sea level, a welcome break after the Andes.

Which Galapagos cruise length fits this combination?

With 12 to 14 days total, a 5-day cruise keeps the trip balanced; an 8-day cruise works if you can stretch to 15 or 16 days. A 4-day cruise is possible but leaves little time for remote islands. See 5-day Galapagos cruise and 8-day Galapagos cruise.

What should you book first?

Book Machu Picchu entry tickets and the train early, because daily visitor numbers are limited. Then book the Galapagos cruise, and finally the flights that link them. Keep the international flights flexible until the cruise and Machu Picchu dates are confirmed.

What does the trip cost?

Machu Picchu adds entry tickets, the train to Aguas Calientes, hotels in Cusco and the Sacred Valley, and flights Lima–Cusco. A mid-range Peru section of 5 to 6 days often costs US$1,500 to 3,000 per person. The Galapagos section depends on the cruise class; see Galapagos cruise prices 2027. Add the Lima–Quito or Lima–Guayaquil flight, often US$250 to 500.

When is the best season for both?

Peru’s dry season (May to September) is the most popular time for Machu Picchu, with clearer skies on the trail and at the citadel. The Galapagos is good year-round; in those months it is cool season, with rich marine life and calm, dry days. December to March is rainy in the Andes, and February is when the Inca Trail closes for maintenance, though Machu Picchu itself stays open.
