An Ecuador and Galapagos tour makes the most of the long flight. Because every Galapagos trip passes through Quito or Guayaquil, adding two to four days on the mainland lets you see colonial Quito, the cloud forest, Andean markets or volcanoes. Here are the most popular add-ons and how to fit them. Traveling as a family or group of friends? Galapagos charters let you choose the route, the timing and who is on board.
Ecuador and Galapagos tour: what is the quick answer?
Quick answer: add 2 days for Quito and the Middle of the World, 3 days to include the Mindo cloud forest, or 4 days to add Otavalo or Cotopaxi. Put the mainland days before the cruise so you have a buffer for flights.

What can you see in Quito in one or two days?
Quito’s historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with churches, plazas and viewpoints. Add the Mitad del Mundo equator monument and the TelefériQo cable car for views over the city. Quito sits at about 2,850 m (9,350 ft); take it slowly on day one.
Is the Mindo cloud forest worth adding?
Yes, for birders and nature lovers. Mindo is about two hours from Quito and offers hummingbirds, tanagers, butterflies and waterfalls. One night in a lodge is ideal.

Add mainland days before the cruise to build in a flight buffer.
What about Otavalo and Cotopaxi?
Otavalo, about two hours north of Quito, is known for its Andean market, best on Saturdays. Cotopaxi National Park, about 1.5 hours south, offers volcano views, hikes and wildlife such as Andean foxes and condors on lucky days.
How many days should the whole trip be?
A common plan is 3 mainland days plus a 5 or 8-day cruise, totaling 9 to 12 days. If you start or end in Guayaquil, consider a day on the coast instead. Read Quito or Guayaquil and a 10-day Galapagos itinerary.
What is a sample 11-day Ecuador and Galapagos plan?
Day 1: arrive in Quito. Day 2: Quito old town and the equator monument. Day 3: Mindo cloud forest, overnight in a lodge. Day 4: return to Quito. Days 5 to 11: 8-day Galapagos cruise from Baltra, ending with the flight back to Quito or Guayaquil and the connection home. Adjust the cruise length to your budget.
Does the Amazon fit in the same trip?
Yes, with three or four extra days. Ecuador’s Amazon lodges are reached by a short flight from Quito to Coca, then a river trip. Read Galapagos and the Amazon for a full plan.
Where should you stay in Quito?
Most travelers stay in the historic center for character and walkability, or in the La Mariscal or La Floresta neighborhoods for restaurants. If your flight to the islands leaves early, hotels near Mariscal Sucre airport in Tababela save about 45 minutes of driving. Choose based on whether you want to explore the city or simply rest before the cruise.
Can you visit the equator on the same day as the old town?
Yes. The Mitad del Mundo monument and the nearby Intiñan museum are about 45 to 60 minutes from the old town. A half-day tour covers both, and you can spend the rest of the day in the historic center. Combine it with the TelefériQo only if you are already used to the altitude, as the cable car rises to about 4,000 m (13,100 ft).
