Quito or Guayaquil Before Your Galapagos Cruise? How to Choose the Gateway

Flying to the Galapagos means passing through Quito or Guayaquil. Compare flight times, altitude, hotels, sightseeing and US connections to choose the gateway city that fits your trip.
4 min read

Every flight to the islands departs from Quito or Guayaquil, so choosing a gateway is part of planning. The Guayaquil to Galapagos flight is shorter, because flights from Quito usually stop in Guayaquil anyway. Quito offers more to see but sits at high altitude. Here is how to choose. If your group would rather have the whole yacht and set its own pace, compare Galapagos charters before you book.

Guayaquil to Galapagos or Quito: what is the quick answer?

Quick answer: choose Guayaquil for the shortest island flight, sea-level comfort and an easy overnight. Choose Quito if you want to explore the historic center or add Andes and Amazon trips. Both have flights from Miami, Houston and other US hubs.

How long are the flights?

Guayaquil to Baltra or San Cristóbal is about 1 hour 45 minutes. Quito flights often stop in Guayaquil and take about 3 to 3.5 hours in total. From the USA, Miami to Quito or Guayaquil is about 4 to 4.5 hours.

What about altitude and comfort?

Quito sits at about 2,850 m (9,350 ft), which can cause mild altitude effects. Guayaquil is at sea level and warm. Travelers sensitive to altitude often prefer Guayaquil.

Both cities have direct flights from major US hubs.

What can you see in each city?

Quito: a UNESCO-listed old town, the equator monument and day trips to cloud forest or volcanoes. Guayaquil: the Malecón 2000 riverfront, Las Peñas neighborhood and the iguana park. See Ecuador and Galapagos itineraries.

What is the Transit Control Card and where do you get it?

Every visitor must buy the US$20 Transit Control Card at the Quito or Guayaquil airport before checking in for the island flight. Bags are also inspected to protect the islands. Read Galapagos entry requirements.

Can you arrive and fly to the islands the same day?

It is not recommended. Most island flights leave in the morning, and international arrivals from the USA often land in the evening. A delay could make you miss the cruise departure. Spend the night before in the gateway city. See why arrive the day before.

Can you fly into one city and out of the other?

Yes, and it is common: for example, arrive in Quito to explore the old town, and return via Guayaquil for a shorter flight home. Open-jaw international tickets often cost about the same. Make sure your island flights match the cruise’s start and end airports (Baltra or San Cristóbal).

Where should you stay before the island flight?

In Guayaquil, hotels near the Malecón or near José Joaquín de Olmedo airport are both good; the airport is close to the city. In Quito, the airport is about 45 to 60 minutes from the city, so many travelers stay near the airport in Tababela the night before the flight. Ask your cruise seller about the flight time before choosing.

What if your international flight is delayed?

Most flights from the USA arrive in the evening. If a delay pushes your arrival past the last connection, an overnight buffer means you still reach the islands the next morning. If you have no buffer, contact the cruise seller immediately; they may be able to rebook you on a later island flight, but the cruise itself will not wait. Insurance with missed connection cover helps. See Galapagos travel insurance.
