Galapagos trip cost: what is the quick answer?

Quick answer: for one person sharing a cabin, a realistic total from the USA is about US$4,000 to 6,000 for a 5-day tourist-class cruise, US$6,500 to 9,500 for an 8-day first-class cruise, and US$10,000 to 16,000 for an 8-day luxury cruise, including all flights and fees. Ranges are indicative; verify each item.

What are the fixed costs every traveler pays?

Some costs apply to everyone regardless of the boat:

  • Galapagos National Park entry fee: US$200 for foreign adults, paid in cash or as instructed on arrival. Verify the current amount.
  • Transit Control Card (TCT): US$20, bought at Quito or Guayaquil airport before the island flight.
  • Island flight: roughly US$350 to 600 round trip from Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra or San Cristóbal.

Our Galapagos entry requirements page explains documents and fees step by step.

How much are flights from the USA to Ecuador?

Round-trip economy fares from Miami, Houston, Atlanta or New York to Quito or Guayaquil typically run US$450 to 900, more at holidays. Nonstops from Miami and Houston are the shortest. Most travelers spend one night on the mainland before the island flight, because cruises start in the morning.

What about tips, drinks and insurance?

Tips are customary: a common guideline is about US$15 to 25 per guest per day for the crew and a similar or slightly lower amount for the naturalist guide, paid at the end of the cruise. Alcohol and soft drinks are extra on many boats. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover usually costs 4 to 8 percent of the trip price.

How can you build your own budget?

Start with the cruise fare, then add flights, fees, one or two hotel nights in Quito or Guayaquil, tips, drinks and insurance. Add 10 percent for incidentals. What does a sample 8-day budget look like?

Example for one traveler sharing a double cabin on an 8-day first-class cruise, flying from Miami in March:

  • Cruise fare: about US$6,200
  • Round-trip flight Miami to Quito: about US$650
  • Island flight Quito to Baltra and back from San Cristóbal: about US$480
  • Park entry fee and Transit Control Card: US$220
  • Two hotel nights in Quito: about US$260
  • Tips for crew and guide: about US$280
  • Travel insurance: about US$400
  • Drinks, souvenirs and airport meals: about US$250

Total: about US$8,740, or roughly 40 percent above the cruise fare. A couple sharing a cabin would pay about double, minus shared hotel rooms.

Which budget mistakes should you avoid?

First, booking the island flight separately without checking the cruise start time. The boat leaves when it leaves; a delayed independent flight can cost you a day of the cruise or more. Many sellers book the island flight with the cruise for that reason.

Second, forgetting cash. The park fee and tips are often paid in US dollars in cash, and ATMs on the islands can be unreliable. Ecuador uses the US dollar, so no exchange is needed, but bring small bills.

Third, skipping insurance. The Galapagos are remote; a medical evacuation to the mainland is expensive. Check that your policy covers it, along with trip interruption and missed connections. Finally, ask whether the fare already includes wetsuits and drinks, because those small items add up over eight days.
