Cruises, Charters & Vessels

What is the difference between a yacht, a catamaran and an expedition ship in the Galapagos?

Galapagos vessels fall into a few classes. Small motor and sailing yachts typically carry up to 16 guests, the most common size in the islands. Catamarans, usually also up to 16 guests, offer wider decks and steadier motion at anchor.

Expedition ships carry roughly 40 to 100 guests, 100 being the upper limit for Galapagos cruise vessels, and add larger dining rooms, lectures and sometimes elevators. Dive liveaboards are specialist boats for certified divers.

All follow the same park rules and approved itineraries, so the class changes comfort, motion and social feel rather than wildlife access. Larger ships split guests into several guided groups ashore.
