A 10-day Galapagos itinerary is a sweet spot: long enough for a full 8-day cruise to remote islands, plus two relaxed days on land to explore at your own pace. Most travelers add the land days on Santa Cruz, the hub island, or on Isabela, the largest and quieter island. Traveling as a family or group of friends? Galapagos charters let you choose the route, the timing and who is on board.

10-day Galapagos itinerary: what is the quick answer?

Quick answer: fly to the mainland on day 1, start an 8-day cruise on day 2, end on day 9 on Santa Cruz or San Cristóbal, then spend one night on Santa Cruz or take a ferry to Isabela, flying home on day 10 or 11. Or put the land days before the cruise.

See the 8-day Galapagos cruise guide and Galapagos cruises.

What does a sample plan look like?

Day Plan
1 Fly from the USA to Quito or Guayaquil
2–9 8-day Galapagos cruise
9 Cruise ends; transfer to Santa Cruz hotel
10 Free day: Tortuga Bay, highlands or a day tour
11 Fly to the mainland and connect home

Santa Cruz or Isabela for land days?

Santa Cruz has the Charles Darwin Research Station, Tortuga Bay, highland tortoise reserves and many restaurants. Isabela is quieter, with flamingo lagoons, the Sierra Negra volcano and Concha de Perla snorkeling. See Santa Cruz and Isabela.

How do you time the flights?

Cruises start and end with morning flights. If your cruise ends at Baltra, Santa Cruz is a short transfer away; from San Cristóbal, stay in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno or take a ferry. Ferries between islands take about 2 hours and can be rough.

Is a land-based extension better than a longer cruise?

Land days are cheaper and flexible, but a cruise reaches remote sites that day tours cannot. Read cruise or land tour.

What can you do on a land day on Santa Cruz?

Walk to Tortuga Bay for a beach and marine iguanas, visit the Charles Darwin Research Station, see giant tortoises in the highlands at El Chato or Rancho Primicias, and explore the lava tunnels. In the evening, Puerto Ayora has restaurants and a lively fish market. Day tours to North Seymour or Bartolomé are possible if not on your cruise.

What can you do on Isabela?

On Isabela, hike to the rim of Sierra Negra, snorkel at Concha de Perla, visit the flamingo lagoons and the tortoise breeding center, and take a boat to Los Túneles for lava arches, turtles and seahorses. Puerto Villamil is a small, relaxed town with sandy streets.

How much does a 10-day trip cost?

The 8-day cruise is the largest cost; see Galapagos cruise prices 2027. Land days on Santa Cruz or Isabela add mid-range hotels from about US$120 to 300 per night, plus day tours from about US$150 to 250 per person. Inter-island ferries cost around US$30 to 40 each way. Compared with a longer cruise, land days are a cost-effective way to add time in the islands.

Should you add the land days before or after the cruise?

After is the most common choice: the cruise ends near Santa Cruz, and you can relax with no time pressure. Before can work too, giving a buffer if a flight is delayed. Just make sure the land days and cruise start at the right airport, Baltra or San Cristóbal, and confirm transfers with the cruise operator.

Frequently asked questions about 10-day Galapagos itineraries

Is 10 days enough for the Galapagos?

Yes, it allows an 8-day cruise plus land time, which covers most highlights.

Should I add land days before or after the cruise?

After is common because the cruise ends near Santa Cruz; before works if you want a buffer.

How do I get from Santa Cruz to Isabela?

By public ferry, about 2 hours, or by a short inter-island flight.

Can I see giant tortoises on Santa Cruz?

Yes, in the highland reserves and at the Charles Darwin Research Station.

Do I need a guide on land days?

Some sites require a licensed guide; others like Tortuga Bay can be visited independently.
