Money, Costs & Tipping

What currency is used in the Galapagos, and how much cash should I bring?

Ecuador uses the US dollar, so US travelers do not need to exchange money. Bring cash for the park entrance fee unless your quote says it is included, plus tips, the Itabaca Channel ferry, taxis and small shops.

Smaller bills are easier to use; small businesses often refuse US$50 and US$100 notes. ATMs exist in Puerto Ayora and Puerto Baquerizo Moreno but can run out of cash or limit withdrawals, and options are fewer on Isabela.

Hotels, restaurants and many shops in town accept cards, sometimes with a surcharge. Tell your bank you are traveling and carry a backup card.
